One of the coolest neighborhoods in New York City is East Harlem also called El Barrio or Spanish Harlem. It was once a predominantly Italian neighborhood and many of the American-Italian crime families were located there including the Genovese family. Al Pacino was born in East Harlem and Celia Cruz and Tito Puente lived there and it’s home to Tupac Shakur. Now it is mostly Puerto Rican and Mexican. It is a very friendly and lively neighborhood which has resisted gentrification. Oh, and it’s fabulous for street photography! Whether you live in New York City or you are visiting the city, I highly recommend seeing it. I do photo tours and street photography workshops there on a very regular basis.
